Link Cable Bot
A downloadable game for Windows and Linux
Have you ever wondered how old handhelds could communicate with each other using only a simple cable? The answer: They all have tiny robots in them! Guide one of these robots back and forth between two handhelds to connect the two games, but watch out! This old cable is frayed and prone to interference, which could destroy the robot and bring the multiplayer game to an abrupt end!
I built this game in Godot for the Kenney Jam 2024. I had entered in 2022 2021 (I misremembered), but due to unfamiliarity with the engine, my project didn't work out. This time, I heavily based my code on the Godot documentation's 2D game tutorial so I had a good reference on what to actually do. Of course, I made sure the game would be different enough to not be a mere reskin. I was finally able to get a hang on making a game in Godot, so I consider this game to be a complete success!
This game incorporates the theme of connection by being a dramatization of connecting two Game Boy-like handhelds for multiplayer. The playfield also has a symmetrical layout, mostly by happenstance.
I have ideas for how I could tweak and improve the game, such as adjusting where the player starts and ways to make the game get harder as it goes on, but since I got it done so close to the deadline, I'll wait until after the jam to implement them.
